What are dental implants?

Dental implants are posts made of titanium that your Advanced Dentistry provider inserts into the empty sockets where your teeth used to be. After placement, the posts integrate with your jawbone, providing a base for restorations, like crowns, bridges, or implant-retained dentures.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer various benefits, including:

  • Improved oral health
  • Convenience
  • Enhanced confidence
  • Durability

Dental implants also make biting and chewing easier. If you’re used to wearing dentures, they can even improve your speech. This is because implants don’t move around like dentures, so it’s easier to speak clearly.

Who is a candidate for dental implants?

To get dental implants, you need healthy gums and enough jawbone density to support them. If you have gum disease or bone loss, your Advanced Dentistry provider might recommend a prerequisite treatment, like scaling and root planing or a bone graft.

During your implant consultation, let your provider know if you have an underlying medical condition, like heart disease or diabetes. These issues won’t keep you from getting dental implants, but they may increase the risk of surgical complications.

What does getting dental implants involve?

At Advanced Dentistry, getting dental implants takes at least three visits to the office.

First visit

If you qualify for implants, your provider numbs your mouth with a local anesthetic and inserts a series of titanium posts into your empty tooth sockets. After the procedure, your provider explains how to reduce the risk of infection while your mouth heals.

Second visit

Several months later, after the implants finish integrating with your jaw, you return to the Advanced Dentistry office. Your provider takes digital impressions with an iTero® intraoral scanner and sends them to a nearby dental lab.

Technicians at the lab use your impressions to design and manufacture custom dental restorations, like crowns, bridges, or implant-retained dentures.

Third visit

When the dental lab finishes your custom restorations, you visit Advanced Dentistry for the third and final time. Your provider attaches the restorations to your dental implants, polishes your teeth, and provides care instructions.

How do I care for my dental implants?

Caring for dental implants is easy. To keep yours in optimal condition, Advanced Dentistry recommends brushing your teeth twice daily, visiting the office every six months for professional teeth cleaning, and protecting your implants with a mouthguard if you play contact sports or participate in other high-impact activities.
