What is a teeth cleaning?

A teeth cleaning is a preventive treatment that removes plaque from your teeth and gums.

Plaque is a clingy type of bacteria that causes tooth decay, commonly called cavities. Once plaque sticks to your teeth, it releases toxins that eat away at your protective tooth enamel. It begins to erode your teeth and can even travel beneath your gumline.

What happens during a teeth cleaning?

Next, your provider looks inside your mouth to detect signs of tooth erosion. They also view your soft tissues, such as your tongue and inner cheeks, to identify abnormal growths or lesions. Before performing your cleaning, your provider may take digital X-rays to view your tooth-supporting tissue and bone.

For the cleaning, your provider uses a special device to remove plaque from your teeth. They also use a high-powered toothbrush to clear away any leftover debris and bacteria. Finally, your provider flosses each of your teeth. 

They may apply a tooth-strengthening fluoride treatment to protect your smile after your cleaning.

How often should I schedule a teeth cleaning?

The experienced providers at Advanced Dentistry recommend scheduling a teeth cleaning once every six months. Frequent visits can prevent plaque buildup and help you avoid restorative dental work, like crowns, bridges, and dental implants. 

If you have multiple cavities, gum disease, or another concern, your provider may suggest additional visits.
