Preventative Dentistry: Protecting Your Oral Health

At Advanced Dental, we offer preventative dentistry services to help patients maintain their oral health. 134642702Through professional cleanings and exams, oral cancer screening, sealants and fluoride treatments, and periodontal care, patients can prevent the need for more extensive dental treatment in the future. Contact us if you are interested in learning more about how you can actively protect your oral health through preventative dentistry. During your consultation with Dr. Varghese P. John at our Sugar Land-area practice, we will create a custom treatment plan unique to your dental needs.

Professional cleanings are essential because they minimize future bacteria buildup by smoothing out the surfaces of your teeth where bacteria usually accumulates. It is usually recommended for patients to have their teeth cleaned bi-annually, but some patients require more frequent visits. During your cleaning, we will use a small metal instrument to gently remove tartar above and below the gum line. Your hygienist will also use a vibrating device to loosen tartar buildup, which is then rinsed away with water. Finally, your hygienist will carefully polish and floss your teeth. We may also apply a fluoride gel directly to your teeth. Fluoride rebuilds enamel and protects against its breakdown.

Dental exams allow your dentist to assess the health of your teeth and gums, and make the appropriate recommendations for any needed treatment. Dr. John will use a metal probe and a small mirror to check your gums for swelling, redness, or deep gum pockets, which are all signs of gum disease. Dr. John will also check your jaw and bite for structural issues. We will take x-rays to assess the overall health of your mouth and tooth roots.

As part your dental exam, Dr. John will examine your neck, lymph nodes, palate, and soft tissues (including cheeks, tongue, and lips) for signs of oral cancer. Early detection of precancerous lesions is important in preventing the progression of oral cancer.

Depending on Dr. John’s recommendations, we may apply sealants to your teeth. Dental sealants, often used in pediatric dentistry, consist of a plastic material that is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. The material provides a barrier against bacteria, which often accumulates in the hard-to-reach crevices of molars. Sealants can last for many years before requiring reapplication.

One of the most important aspects of maintaining your oral health is caring for your gums on a regular basis. Daily brushing and flossing remove bacteria, which can develop into tartar. In-office cleanings are important because tartar buildup can only be removed by a professional. If tartar is not removed, it can lead to the development of gum disease. The disease is most treatable in its early stages, so it is important to have your gums assessed during regular dental exams.
