96904810-xsIf you look in the mirror and think to yourself, “My smile would be perfect if it were just a little whiter,” then professional teeth whitening may be the ideal cosmetic dentistry treatment for you. Over the years, millions of people have discovered the benefits of in-office and at-home professional teeth whitening treatments, which include the dramatic lightening or elimination of stubborn stains on the teeth and the brightening of teeth by multiple shades. It is little wonder that teeth whitening has become one of the most popular procedures in all of dentistry.

However, even teeth whitening is not for everybody. Although the procedure is highly safe and effective for most patients, not all patients will be suitable candidates. At Advanced Dentistry, the cosmetic dentistry practice of Dr. Varghese John in Sugar Land, teeth whitening candidates are carefully screened to ensure that only those patients who will benefit from the procedure are allowed to proceed with treatment. If we feel that a patient will not benefit from teeth whitening, or that a patient is at a higher than usual risk for complications associated with the procedure, we will suggest an alternative method of achieving a whiter, healthier-looking. Regardless of your needs and goals, you can rest assured that Dr. John will arrive at a treatment plan that is perfectly suited to you.

Are you a good candidate for professional teeth whitening? We invite you to find out for yourself by meeting with Dr. John at his office for a private consultation at your soonest convenience.

Determining Candidacy for Professional Teeth Whitening

Fortunately, most patients who have basically healthy teeth and gums are good candidates for professional teeth whitening. Our practice offers both in-office teeth whitening, which allows patients to brighten their teeth by up to ten shades in approximately an hour, and take-home whitening kits, which allows patients to achieve similarly excellent results in the privacy of their own homes at their own pace. If your teeth are free from decay, chips, and cracks, and you do not suffer from advanced gum disease, you may be a good candidate for teeth whitening.

Suitable candidates for teeth whitening also have realistic expectations for the outcomes of their procedures. It is important that you understand that some stains will respond better to teeth whitening than others. Extrinsic stains that are more yellowish in hue tend to respond very well to teeth whitening, as opposed to intrinsic purplish or greyish stains. While most stains will be lightened by teeth whitening, only some will be removed altogether.

Good candidates for teeth whitening will also be at least 16 years old and not pregnant or nursing. If you have dental crowns, bridges, or porcelain veneers, you should understand that these restorations will not respond to the teeth whitening gel. If you suffer from tooth sensitivity, teeth whitening may not be a suitable option for you.
